Few subjects hold more universal appeal than that of medicine, and surely few books have evoked medicine’s drama and magic more powerfully than On Doctoring. It is the humanity in medicine that has inspired the pens of countless writers, and that has inspired the pens of countless writers, and that has now been captured in this remarkable anthology of medical literature. On Doctoring captures the pain and triumphs associated with the practice of medicine in an extraordinary collection. Written by physicians as well as non-physicians, this compilation of stories, poems, and essays eloquently captures what it is like to be sick, to be cured, to succumb to illness, or to overcome it. Drawing on the full spectrum of human emotions, the editors have included selections from such important and diverse writers as Anton Chekov, W. H. Auden, Pablo Neruda, Ernest Hemingway, Flannery O’Connor, Raymond Carver, and many more. In this era of managed healthcare, when medicine is becoming more and more technical, institutionalized and impersonal, this book recaptures the breadth, wonder, and the miracle of the medical profession. Presenting the issues, concerns, and challenges facing doctors and patients alike, the illuminating On Doctoring will speak to the hearts and minds of today’s readers. It is a book you will reach for time and again – a celebration of life and of a profession that helps make life possible.

Medicine: A History of Healing is a book that describes medicine from before we can think of all the way up to now. It shows different cultures of the world and how they practice medicine. The opening chapters describe the chronology of medical history and the development of medical theory and practice around the world. The ebb and flow of knowledge from East to West and the divergence and convergence over time of disparate medical practices is brilliantly explained in the latter chapters. The history of medicine is dealt with thematically, concentrating in individual chapters on particular types of therapy. The achievements of the world’s great healers are also examined. Throughout, the choice the illustrations richly complements the text and provides the readers with a glorious visual panorama of the practice of the healing arts across the world. The final chapter looks specifically at how the two cultures have interacted and examines the reassertion of the holistic approach to health in Western cultures. This book examines the idea of integration rather than divergence, looking at the diverse traditions of healing all over the world, tracing their common roots, and showing how Eastern traditions and Western science are gradually coming together again to the benefit of humanity.

In 2000, The Yoga Institute, under the guidance of Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra, Director, Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra and leading cardiologist Dr. Shekhar Ambardekar launched the CARING HEART PROJECT. Through a series of press advertisements, patients suffering from coronary artery disease were asked to participate in a major Yoga lifestyle research project. All pre and post research testing were free, but most importantly, for a full year, participants were imparted comprehensive training in a Yogic Lifestyle: through the positive regimes of classical Yoga. This exposure to the ancient knowledge of Yoga techniques and philosophy was imparted with the objective of changing attitudes and incorporating discipline and balance in life, which is so important for patients suffering from cardiac diseases. The results and findings of this detailed study on THE CARING HEART PROJECT have just been consolidated. For the very first time, detailed test reports of these patients have been compared to control group. Not exposed to any Yoga training. And the results are most astounding. The approach is holistic view, where the body mind and soul are given a boost…. to overcome this serious bodily through Yoga. Lifestyle change advocated by the Yoga Institute in Santacruz, Mumbai. The results of this study speak clearly for themselves! Modern medicine has realized that it needs to look beyond its nose for answers. This book is not just the result of this detailed research. It is a detailed guide for daily healthy living!!! Nothing is too serious and nothing is too late to change! Golden insights into not just physical Asanas, Pranayams, Kriyas…but healthy daily routine is blended well with wholesome dietary changes and myriad other invaluable facts.
